Union HRD minister Smriti Irani has assured allocations for
establishment of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Telangana in
the next Union Budget. Ms Irani gave this assurance to Chief Minister K.
Chandrasekhar Rao at their meeting in Delhi on Sunday.
Ms Irani pointed out that the Centre had announced setting up an IIM in
AP in this year’s General Budget. If the IIM does come through for
Telangana, it will join a select of six other states which have both the
IIM and the prestigious IIT: West Bengal, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh,
Madhya Prad-esh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan.
The convention till 2008 was that a state would be given either an IIT
or an IIM. That convention was given a go-bye in 2008 by the UPA. When
Ms Irani brought up the issue of constructing toilets and additional
classrooms in government-run primary schools by August 2015, Mr Rao told
her that it was already on the agenda of his government and was part of
the TRS election manifesto.
Ms Irani offered to provide as much money as was needed for these
constructions, provided the state government sends concrete proposals
immediately. Mr Rao agreed to send the details.
In another development, Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar
promised the Chief Minister that the ministry would release Rs 1,100
crore, the state’s share of the Compe-nsatory Afforestation Fund
Management and Planning Authority, for taking up afforestation
programmes. Mr Rao also sought for early forest clearances for
Pranahita-Chevella project and new mines being explored by the Singareni
Collieries.
