Set up in 1767[1] to help consolidate the territories of the British East India Company, it is one of the oldest Engineering Departments of the Government of India. The Survey of India's distinguished history includes the handling of the mammoth Great Trigonometric Survey under William Lambton and George Everest and the discovery of Mt. Everest. Its members are from Survey of India Service cadre of Civil Services of India.

- Must have registered (or entitled to Registration) under Section 31 (C) or 32 of the Pharmacy Act, 1948.
- For Ex-Serviceman have been a dispenser Class-I in the Army Medical Corps.
- Desirable:
- Should have a good knowledge of Hindi
- Must attend to all clerical duties in a dispensary.
